Raising chickens and other animals on your hobby farm definitely comes with a huge learning curve. Although I’m no expert in farming, I can tell you that chickens love snacks!! Today I’m going to share a homemade chicken recipe that your girls and roos will love.
I’ll spare you all the details of how our little hobby farm was created. Instead let’s discuss some fun facts about chickens first. Then we’ll move straight into the recipe.
Cool Facts About Chickens
- Chickens see in color vision and can actually see many more colors and shades than humans. Also, because they are sensitive to infrared light, they can see sunlight up to an hour before humans.
- Chickens can recognize up to 100 faces, including humans and other animals. Studies have shown that chickens have great memories.
- Chickens dream! Just like dogs and cats to seem to be chasing something in their sleep, chickens also have vivid dreams. Chickens experience REM (Rapid-Eye Movement) indicating that they do in fact have dreams (and probably nightmares?)
- Hens can choose which rooster fathers their chicks. No they don’t go out on dates to make this choice. The hen can choose to eject the sperm of the rooster. This usually happens if there is another rooster higher in the pecking order.
- Chickens can be hypnotized! This is my favorite fun fact! With the chickens head near the ground, draw a line starting at the chicken’s beak extending straight outward in front of the chicken. As a result, the chicken will go into a trace and can stay immobile for up to 30 minutes. Scientists believe this is a defense mechanism. ** Don’t do this often. It’s unknown how much stress this puts on the chicken. **
