Our morning hikes are a great way for the family to get focused. Between homeschool, a full time motocross riding/racing schedule, hobby farming and so many other interesting things we do, our lifestyle can get chaotic to say the least. We are also fortunate enough to live in an amazingly beautiful area in West Virginia. So we thought we’d share our morning hike adventures with you!
West Virginia Fall Foliage
According to the WV Tourism website the fall foliage is supposed to be at it’s peak in our area in early October. This year was unusually wet and warm so we still have a lot of green. As you can see in the picture, a lot of the leaves have already turned to brilliant reds, oranges and yellows!
If you live close by or have some vacation time, West Virginia has several areas in the state that are hot spots for fall leaf viewing. You don’t have to search very far though. The colors are vibrant everywhere you look!
Things To Do In The Creek
The kids make sure our hikes always involve a trip down to the creek. Although this creek is specific to our location, any creek in West Virginia will offer the same opportunities. For example, the kids keep the following activities on their short list:
- Stone Skipping – the art of throwing a flat stone across the water so that it bounces off the surface (skips) as many times as possible. The kids always enjoy stone skipping at the creek. Although lately they’ve complained that all the good rocks are gone. I guess we need to move to a different spot!
- Fishing – Luckily our local DNR stocks our creek so there is always a few hot spots. If you visit West Virginia, don’t forget your poles (and don’t forget to get a license!)
- Rock Kerplunking – If you don’t know what “rock kerplunking” is, I’ll fill you in. Find a large (15-20 lb) rock. Throw it in a shot put fashion into the deepest area of the creek. Listen to it “kerplunk” into the water.
- Balancing Acts – Taking a stroll through a creek usually ends up being a full body workout by the time it’s all said and done. Twisting and turning your body in an awkward way trying not to slip. The kids think it’s great fun to see if you can balance your way through rocks in the creek without falling and breaking a bone or getting drenched. PSA – if you haven’t caught on yet, the rocks are super slippery.
West Virginia Hiking with Kids
Our morning walk ended up being approximately 2 miles round trip. I always try to take the necessities in a backpack. For example, bottles of water, a charged cell phone and healthy snacks are always good options. If your kids are anything like mine, you’ll also have at least one layer of clothes stuffed in the backpack as well as something like a slingshot or a handful of rocks!
In conclusion, just remember to have fun, take a deep breathe to smell the fresh air and stay in amazement of all that the beauty of nature has to offer!
